Happy (almost) spring! It’s currently snowing as I look out the window, but I am hopeful that clearer skies are on the way!
I am also hopeful for peace in our world. As you are most likely aware, our world is experiencing turmoil right now and being a worldwide organization, Rotary has released the following statement:
It is a tragic and sad time for the people of Ukraine and the world.
At Rotary, we are deeply concerned by the deteriorating situation in Ukraine and the escalating loss of life and humanitarian hardship there. Continued military action against Ukraine will not only devastate the region, but also risk spreading tragic consequences across Europe and the world.
As one of the world’s largest humanitarian organizations, we have made peace the cornerstone of our global mission. We join the international community in calling for an immediate cease fire, withdrawal of Russian forces, and a restoration of diplomatic efforts to resolve this conflict through dialogue.
In the past decade, Rotary clubs in Ukraine, Russia and nearby countries have transcended national differences and have actively engaged in peace-building projects to promote goodwill and to marshal assistance for the victims of war and violence. Today, our thoughts are with our fellow Rotary members and others in Ukraine coping with these tragic events. Rotary International will do everything in its power to bring aid, support and peace to the region.
Many of you have asked how you can assist Ukraine. Here are a few options:
ShelterBox is responding to the Ukraine crisis and sending a team to eastern Europe. We are working to understand the type of emergency shelter people fleeing Ukraine need, if our aid will be suitable, and which locations we might be able to work in. We are coordinating with local authorities, Rotary, and other aid organizations to make sure as many people as possible will receive the help they need. For information and updates visit https://www.shelterboxusa.org/the-ukraine-crisis-explained/
In response to the deepening humanitarian crisis in Ukraine, The Rotary Foundation has created an official channel for Rotary members around the world to contribute funds to support the relief efforts underway by Rotary districts and has designated its Disaster Response Fund as the main avenue for contributions. Now is the time to apply for a District Grant to help fund your projects in 22-23. District Grants reimburse Clubs $.50 for every $1.00 spent of Club raised funds on a project. Rotaract Clubs can apply for District Grants also.
How do you apply?
First, Two members of the Club complete the Qualification Course for District Grants found on the District Web site.
Second, the President-Elect and Foundation Chair or Designate sign the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the District and the Club and send to Martin Ward, Foundation Chair or myself, District Grants Chair. The MOU can be found when you click on the Qualification Course.
Your Club is now qualified for District Grants. One of the members who completed the course can become the Grant Administrator and submit a project proposal on the District web site. The course ”Grants 101” (found in the same area) gives a step-by-step on working through a grant from the initial proposal to the final report.
All proposals must in by May 31, 2022. If you need ideas, scroll down the left side of the screen when you have the qualification site open to find a list of previous projects,
There is an upcoming RLI II and it will be run March 14th and 21st. The time for March 14th is 6:30-9:30 pm and March 21st 6:45 to 9:30 pm. We will be sending out a note to all our District Rotarians in early February with registration details.
LEARN MORE ABOUT HOW ROTARIANS ARE HELPING GET CLEAN WATER TO THOSE IMPACTED BY DISASTER
Water, just like shelter, is a human right. When disasters devastate whole communities and force people from their homes, it can be hard to ensure access to clean water. This International Water Day, March 22, 2022 at 1:00pm EST ShelterBox Canada is hosting an expert led panel discussion for Rotarians on why our water filters are a vital piece of aid, and how they have evolved to better serve disaster impacted communities.
As we face one record-breaking disaster after the other, last year 113 million lost their homes and numbers are projected to grow. ShelterBox continues to work hard to ensure that families receive the life-saving shelter and tools they need to recover after disaster. We take comfort knowing Rotarians and Rotary Clubs are up for the challenge and continue to put service above self to support families in their time of need.
In response to the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine, The Rotary Foundation has created a channel for members to contribute funds to support relief efforts.
A new report from the Institute for Economics and Peace highlights grave ecological threats around the world — and suggests ways advocates can nurture a more benign environmental future.
